The curriculum stresses both theoretical and computational mathematics and is flexible enough to key a student's program to individual interests and abilities. Receiving a well-rounded mathematical education graduates pursue Ph.D.'s, secure a position in government or industry, or further a teaching career. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in cooperation with Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa), facilitates a cooperative Ph.D. in pure or applied mathematics for truly exceptional students wishing to pursue doctorate in research areas represented by the combined graduate mathematics faculties of Rhodes University and Youngstown State University. Upon successful completion of all doctoral work, the Ph.D. is granted by Rhodes University. Campus and Facilities Youngstown State University is a state-assisted university located in northeastern Ohio, midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The beautiful, unified campus has a lively calendar of cultural events and recreational opportunities. Enrollment was about 15,200 students in Fall 2010. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has extensive computing facilities that include microcomputers, workstations, University mainframe, and access to supercomputers. Approximately 7 million people live within an hour's driving time of Youngstown (near Interstates 76, 80, and 79), with over a half million in the metropolitan area. Financial Assistance Assistantships are available each year. The stipend is currently $10,000 for two semesters, with another $1,200 available for summer term, for a total support of up to $11,200 for the year. All instructional and out-of-state fees are waived for each semester the assistantship is held; and assistants pay no instructional fees for the summer term if they have been an assistant for the previous two semesters. Graduate assistants are required to take a minimum of 9 hours per semester—18 hours per academic year—and perform duties of approximately 20 hours per week. Assignments may include complete responsibility for teaching a class, tutoring in the Mathematics Assistance Center, or working with the Department's computer systems administrators. The Department of Geological & Environmental Sciences offers a program of study leading to the M.S. degree in Environmental Science , as well as a Certificate in Environmental Studies. Program Description The environmental science program offers a multidisciplinary, interdepartmental graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree. The program office is housed in Moser Hall and is administered by the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences (GES). This program is intended for individuals who have undergraduate degrees in environmental science, other natural sciences, engineering, or health professions. It is designed to meet the needs of students and working professionals preparing for supervisory roles in environmental science (research and management), with emphasis on a risk-based approach to the solving of environmental problems. The curriculum requires students to broaden their knowledge with core courses in environmental science, to deepen their expertise with elective courses, and to demonstrate their abilities to prepare a scholarly thesis. The Department of Chemistry offers a program of study leading to the M.S. degree with concentrations available in the following areas of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry education, inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Degree Requirements A minimum of 35 semester hours of credit is required for the MS degree. Chemistry 6975, 6980, 6981, and 6982 are required of all students. Additionally, 9 to 15 semester hours of content courses are required, depending upon performance in placement exams. A minimum of 6 hours of 6990 is also required for the degree. Teaching assistants must register each semester for Chemistry 6976, 6977 or 6978 as assigned by the Department Chairperson. For graduation, the student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in chemistry and must complete an acceptable thesis. Content courses are those with specialized chemistry content, including the advanced and special-topics courses in the chemistry divisions. Fifteen s.h. of content courses are required, at least nine s.h. of which must be at the 6900 level. These and the electives (which may include additional credits in Chem 6990) are chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor. Admission Requirements In addition to the minimum requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, an applicant for admission to the M.S. degree program in the Department of Chemistry must present an undergraduate major in chemistry or the equivalent. Ordinarily, this entails the completion of at least a year's study of organic chemistry and a semester of physical chemistry. In those cases where the undergraduate preparation is slightly deficient, the applicant may be admitted with provisional status with the approval of the Chair of the department and the Graduate Dean. The program seeks to develop the qualities of independent thinking and problem solving skills, with a goal of preparing students for research and academic careers. The Biology Faculty Research Profiles provides brief descriptions of the Biology faculty research interests. Students may pursue the M.S. degree in Biological Sciences in one of two options. The Thesis Option is a research-intensive program designed to provide students a strong foundation in fundamental biological principles and theories through coursework and the completion of a faculty-guided research project (thesis). The Non-thesis Option allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of biology through coursework and the writing of a graduate research paper. The complete application for admission, including all supporting materials, should be received by the School of Graduate Studies and Research at least four weeks before the beginning of the term in which the applicant plans to register.
